Blues & Gospel: Where the Music Began

Any discussion of popular contemporary music must begin with the roots of that music, and in the case of Blues and Gospel, the origins begin when African slaves were first brought to North America in 1619. They brought with them their rhythms, melodies and harmonies. There is a thread that goes from the singing in plantations, to the groups and choirs singing in Black churches in the south, and the itinerant blues players, that migrates up the Mississippi, up to Memphis, where we start to see Soul and R n B music and up to Chicago, Detroit and Motown. That thread is still there in the music we listen to today. We’ll look at the iconic Blues and Gospel artists over the decades and hear the echo of the very first African slaves.
