Haydn, Mozart & the Viennese Style

In this series we will trace the development of the Viennese classical style through the music of Joseph Haydn (1732-1809) and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (1756-1791). Join us as we explore the symphonies, concertos, and overtures of these two composers using audio and video clips featuring some of the greatest conductors and pianists of the twentieth century.

Week 1: early Haydn and the Baroque legacy; young Mozart and the Franco-Italian influence

Week 2: the "Sturm und Drang" works of the 1770s

Week 3: "Jupiter" and other late Mozart symphonies

Week 4: wordless drama in Mozart's piano concertos

Week 5: Haydn's "Paris" symphonies and Mozart's Clarinet Concerto

Week 6: mature mastery in Haydn's "London" symphonies and Trumpet Concerto
