LD403 Women Artists’ Contribution to Western Art
About this event
A selective, scurrilous, and partisan account of Women Artists’ Contribution to Western Art
Instructor: Gerta Moray
Most people have heard of old masters like Michelangelo or Rembrandt – but what about old mistresses? Isn’t that an absurd question? This series of six lecture-discussions will examine how Western society has positioned women in relation to art. In the nineteenth century, the struggle for women’s rights secured them a place in the public sphere. Since the 1960s, women have actually led the way for new directions in art. The generation of Emily Carr, Georgia O’Keeffe, and Frida Kahlo has entered the history books. Succeeding generations from Judy Chicago, Yayoi Kusama, Cindy Sherman, and Yoko Ono have wide name-recognition. We’ll explore their lives and art, plus some of the youngest artists being shown in Vancouver art museums today.
