IP106 Our Strange Relationship with Fiction

IP106 Our Strange Relationship with Fiction

Our relationship with fiction is strange. We know that fictions are made up; nevertheless, we often apply higher moral standards to books and films than to our immediate social environment. In this course, we will explore the history of the notion “fiction” in Western society, from classical antiquity to contemporary positions of evolutionary psychology. Traditional media will play an important role in our discussion: novels, plays, films, etc. However, we will also examine the larger question of how much of our social reality can be understood as “fiction.” Limit 60.
